Spring 2002: Well, here we all are again…
Firstly, before diving headlong into this Spring’s thrilling Lovejoy news update, we’d like to wish a (predictably) belated and somewhat unseasonal ‘Happy New Year’ to you all, I hope it’s turning out ok so far, and that everything is going to plan, and sorry for not being more punctual with our good vibes.
Secondly, we mentioned last time that there has been a problem with our mail PO box address. This admittedly only affected a handful of grimly defiant luddites who, determined not to dirty their hands in the foul waters of technology, insist on using more traditional methods of keeping in touch with us. IE they write letters, put a stamp on them and put them in a letter box. Happily for them, the PO box is now up and running again, so if you count yourself in the above-mentioned minority, please feel free to write to us, and be confident that whatever you write will reach us. Eventually.
Right, on with the proper news. Well, at long last, after nearly eight months of inactivity, interspersed with infrequent (and sometimes indifferent) recording sessions at Church Road studio in Hove, the wonderful new Lovejoy album, ‘Who wants to be a Millionaire?’ is finally finished! Hooray! The master tapes are – as we speak - in the hands of Matinee recordings, along with the artwork, and hopefully, if all goes well, the album will be available by the early summer (well, we’re nothing if not optimistic at Lovejoy HQ).
There has had to be a change to the planned format of the album, which was to have been vinyl. Because of various technical problems, ‘Who wants to be a Millionaire?’ will now be issued on CD. This is sad because vinyl would have been so cool, but its also good news, as undoubtedly this will make the release more accessible to most people, as most people don’t actually own a turntable or buy vinyl anymore. The happy result of this should hopefully be that we will sell many more CDs than we would have done records. And despite being in love with the vinyl format we do actually want to sell lots of records, whatever that makes us.
Anyway, the new album contains nine songs (most of which are brand new) and it represents a significant leap in style from the debut album ‘Songs in the key of Lovejoy’. ‘Who wants to be…’ has a darker edge, and incorporates a much more contemporary sound, and is altogether, in our humble opinion, a much more accomplished record than anything else we’ve ever released. More news on a release date next time.
Meanwhile, it is only fair to mention that our current release, the single ‘Lovejoy plays the hits of Biff Bang Pow!’ is continuing to receive a lot of attention and airplay. In fact, despite being horrendously delayed in its release, it promises to be our most successful record so far, even receiving a “Thanks!” from Alan McGee himself!
Elsewhere, a couple of CD compilation releases are due soon, and a couple of interviews should be published, starting with one on Pinoy Central. Check out the Matinee site for news on this as they tend to list plenty of links to reviewers and magazines. Also, look out for news on the Snowdrops in the near future, including a website, and remember to wish Beaumont good luck in the recording of their new album!
Until next time....
