Autumn 2003: Greetings and welcome to World of Lovejoy, the website that likes to keep you informed of the news, gossip and latest developments in the weird and (occasionally) wonderful world of Lovejoy, and the various other projects that we’re involved in.
In actual fact, real life has been getting in the way of Lovejoy type things of late, which is unfortunate, if not inevitable and also goes someway to explain why there have been no updates since Easter. However, we will try to rectify this over the coming months, with more frequent updates. Anyway despite being so busy with everything else, there have been some happenings in the worlds of Lovejoy and The Snowdrops since the last update, so here goes:
Firstly, since the last update Matinee 50 has been released, featuring most of the matinee bands covering other matinee bands…Lovejoy contributed a cover of ‘Drug Autumn’, originally released by The Windmills. The Snowdrops also contributed a song – ‘Summerness’, a cover of the Melodiegroup song. As with many of Matinee’s releases, this has been generally very well received, with plenty of good reviews.
Secondly Lovejoy have just finished recording yet another cover version, this time for a TVPs compilation, due out next year. We chose to record a version of ‘Someone To Share My Life With’, which is an old fave.
At the same time as this, we’ve also been working on a remix project, one or two songs of which should eventually be released, the first on the upcoming Matinee Recordings Autumn sampler, sometime in October / November. It’s called ‘Strike A Pose’ and is a dancefloor take on ‘Night On Earth, a song from ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?’.
One more release is reported, although we haven’t actually seen copies of it yet, however I’m told it is out and available; A new label based in the Philippines, ‘Factory Girl’ has released their first compilation ‘Working Titles’, featuring an international collection of bands including…well Lovejoy …and we’re not sure who else yet as we haven’t seen it, but it’s bound to be ace. We should get a few copies of this soon enough and they will probably be available from Lovejoy or Matinee at some point.
Interestingly and surprisingly, a package arrived a few weeks ago that contained several copies of Lovejoy’s previous incarnation, a 7” single called ‘A Million Years’ by The Spinning Wheels which was released on Teatime in the heady days of 1991. If you would like to get hold of a copy then contact us at the usual email address, or alternatively – especially if you live in the US, wait a few weeks as Jimmy at Matinee has kindly agreed to stock the single as well.
And that’s about it, Lovejoy and the Snowdrops will be returning to the studio soon, recording more songs for compilations and singles to be released asap, and there may be more live dates, possibly in London and Sweden, although nothing is confirmed yet. But when it is, you’ll be able to read about it here. Eventually.
Oh. One last thing, our friends in Sweden may be interested in a new, excellent fanzine ‘My Secret World’ which contains a feature and interview with Dick all about the influence of sunsets in pop! Contact us at snowboundipc@yahoo.co.uk if you want to know more.
