April/May 2001: Welcome to the latest installment of the Lovejoy website. Its been a relatively quiet couple of months, but there are exciting developments afoot, including the upcoming release of a brand new single, a few songs coming out on compilations, and even a live show!
We mentioned the new Lovejoy single last time, but as it's been subject to some unavoidable delays and hasn't actually been released quite yet, it seems only fair to mention it again: The single comprises two excellent songs, both Biff Bang Pow! covers: 'The Beat Hotel' and 'Hug Me Honey', and was recorded at the same time as the 'A Christmas Wish' single. It's an acoustic record, and is our way of saying goodbye and thank you to the golden age of Creation records. Keith takes the lead vocal on 'Hug Me Honey', with some mystery backing vocals, and Dick and Ally sing 'The Beat Hotel'. Hopefully the delays will not be too significant and it may only be a few weeks, but an update will be posted here or on the Matinée site when definite news is available.
Next up is news of a show, which is coming up very soon, and has been set up by Pam Berry of Stylus:
Saturday April 21st, 6.30-10.30:
Live acoustic performances from:
Beaumont
Melodie Group
Lovejoy
Plus Keith and Pam Berry Djing for the night!
Upstairs at the Blue Posts pub in central London (corner of Newman and Eastcastle Streets, one block north of Oxford Street, and equidistant between Tottenham Court Road and Oxford Circus tubes). It's a modest £2 entry, and any further details can be gained from contacting Lovejoy or Matinée.
We also mentioned last time that a few songs would be appearing on compilations in the near future. The first of these should be available at either the above gig, or another Matinée event the following week (no details yet - check the Matinée site nearer the time). Matinée are releasing a CDEP to coincide with these shows, featuring 7 or 8 songs by the bands involved. The Lovejoy song used is 'Radio', from the 'Songs in the key of Lovejoy' CD. If things actually happen as planned, which is looking increasingly possible (but don't be surprised if it all falls through at the last) the first 200 CDs will come with a free postcard and a freshly written copy of the brand new Snowbound fanzine! This should make a very exciting package available to those lucky people attending either of the upcoming shows…
After the new single and the CDEP, 'Getting Away With It All' should come out on the Matinée 'France on a Bicycle' singles compilation. This will be the first opportunity for those without turntables to hear the debut 'A'-side by Lovejoy, and is therefore very exciting indeed! Following this, theres at least one more compilation coming up, and we'll also be recording new songs over the summer months for a mini LP to be released hopefully by the end of the year. There may even be some more shows over the summer as well!
Elsewhere, Dick and Keith are still playing records as 'Crepescule' in Brighton, Beaumont have a new single coming out over the summer, and Snowbound are preparing to dip their toes into the salty seas of shambolic musical production in an exciting and slightly worrying new venture. Be warned.
